Slightly curious palette due to the use of a few early synthetic dyes (mid to late 19th century) – but classic mihrab design with mosque lamp in the centre of the field. This rug was bought over twenty years ago in The Netherlands by Anthony J Sargeant. It is in remarkably good condition with thick pile – it is a good example of a town rug produced in the late 19th/early 20th Century. These rugs are under-appreciated in the UK – indeed antique rugs in general are under-appreciated – it is clear from auction experiences that private buyers will pay more for ‘production line’ modern poorly conceived and dyed rugs with little connection to the past than they are prepared to pay for antique pieces that retain connection to what has gone before.
