Antique Brass Candlestick

img_4478

A English petal footed brass candlestick dating from about 1780 which was bought many years ago at auction by Anthony Sargeant. It is made using a seamed construction where the two halves of the stem are brazed together (it is sometimes possible to see the seam that runs the length of the candlestick – made clearer if you breathe on the stem). In this example the seam of the sconce at the top has started to split apart with use. When polished the colour of the brass (copper and zinc alloy with some lead and possibly tin added) is a light golden colour.
